This past Saturday Sheridan Way had a bus load of special visitors – an orchestra from Harmony Project Los Angeles, who drove out to Ventura just to meet and play with us. The day was marked by excitement, new faces and friends, and a connection that we plan to continue throughout the years.
We started the morning with introducing ourselves and welcoming our guests to Ventura (their first time here, for most of them!), followed by instrument sectionals. All of the LA students had been playing their instrument for at least 5 years, so it was a great opportunity for us to learn from them and for them to teach us some new things. While teaching artists and volunteered facilitated the groups, it was the students who lead and instructed most of the classes. We had some time for food and socializing, and then joined together for one GIANT rehearsal (70 kids total!) on an arrangement of “Emperor Waltz” by Strauss.
Many thanks to everyone who made this possible, including New West Symphony musicians who donated their time to come and help. We can’t wait to go visit Los Angeles!
